The government will launch the National Electricity Data Sharing Framework this month, which will provide unified data on generation, transmission, distribution, grid operations and power markets.

The framework has been prepared to help the power sector players, especially startups, make informed decisions and plans, Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal said, adding that the framework will be launched within this month.

Framework to help startups access structured power data

Addressing the Brainstorming Conclave on ‘Making the Indian Power Sector AI-enabled’ organised by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and industry body FICCI, Agarwal urged the power industry players to develop new applications by adopting artificial intelligence (AI).

However, tools can be developed when data is provided, and every data cannot be made public, he noted.

“So when we talk about startups, when startups ask for data, then we think whether we can give them data or not, what data we can share and how much we can share. For your convenience, we have made a National Electricity Data Sharing Framework after your (stakeholder) consultation,” the secretary said.

National committee to oversee data governance

The framework will be launched in October itself and provides for a National Electricity Data Governance Committee, which will be led by the CEA Chairman and will have representatives from both the government and the industry (public and private), he said.

The rationale is to give a starting point to the utilities about data sharing in a structured manner because if “you want”, maybe startups can utilise this data set. It has to be consistent, similar in structure so it can be gainfully leveraged by them for giving various decision options,” Agarwal said.

Cyber security to go hand in hand with AI deployment

On concerns related to AI-enabled systems being hacked, he said cyber security and deployment of AI will go hand in hand, and if there are indigenously developed AI models, particularly the applications, “naturally we will control the codes”.
